Enter a temperature in Celsius, Fahrenheit or gas mark and say whether it is for a conventional or fan oven. The calculator shows the equivalent in each scale.
Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.
How the Oven temperature converter works
Choose the scale you have, enter the temperature and pick the oven type. The result is shown for a conventional oven in °C, and then converted.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9.
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32.
- Gas marks are matched to a standard table. For example, gas 4 is 180°C (350°F), gas 6 is 200°C (400°F) and gas 7 is 220°C (425°F). Gas marks run from ¼ and ½ to 9.
- Fan ovens usually run about 20°C (25°F) lower, so if you say the recipe is for a fan oven, 20°C is added to get the conventional figure. The results always include a fan oven setting.
When going from Celsius or Fahrenheit to gas mark, the tool shows the nearest standard setting, so the match may be a little off. It accepts temperatures from 50°C to 350°C. Gas marks are not adjusted for fan ovens. Ovens vary, so use an oven thermometer if your results are inconsistent.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| I have | Celsius |
| Temperature | 180 |
| This is for a | Conventional oven |
Conventional oven: 180 °C
| Gas mark, nearest | Gas mark 4 |
|---|---|
| Fahrenheit | 356 °F |
| Fan oven | 160 °C |
| Fan oven in Fahrenheit | 331 °F |
Tips and common mistakes
Check whether your recipe says fan or conventional, as a 20°C difference can burn or undercook a bake. If it does not say, assume conventional.
Many ovens run hotter or cooler than their dial, so an inexpensive oven thermometer is worth having. Treat gas marks as the nearest match rather than an exact figure. Start checking food a little early the first time you use a converted temperature. For weights and volumes, use the Cooking conversions calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is gas mark 4 in Celsius?
Gas mark 4 is 180°C, or 350°F, in a conventional oven. In a fan oven you would usually set about 160°C.
How do I convert a conventional temperature for a fan oven?
Lower it by about 20°C, or 25°F. The tool shows the fan figure in its results.
Why is the gas mark only approximate?
Gas marks are fixed steps, so a temperature between two marks is matched to the nearest. Use an oven thermometer for precision.
