Choose a shape, enter its measurements in feet, inches, yards, metres or centimetres, and see the area in square feet, square metres, square yards, acres and more.
Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.
How the Area and square footage works
Pick a shape, a unit of length and the measurements. The tool applies the standard formula and converts the answer.
- Rectangle or room: length × width.
- Triangle: base × height ÷ 2.
- Circle: π × radius × radius.
- Trapezoid: (top side + bottom side) ÷ 2 × height.
The area is shown in the unit you chose, and then converted by first turning it into square metres. It then lists square feet, square metres, square yards, square inches, acres and hectares. For reference, one square metre is about 10.76 square feet.
Enter all measurements in the same unit. For a circle, use the radius, which is half the width across. For an irregular shape or an L-shaped room, split it into simple shapes, find each area and add them together. The tool gives geometric area only, so it makes no allowance for waste, walls or fixtures.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Shape | Rectangle or room |
| Measurements in | Feet |
| Length | 14 |
| Width | 12 |
Area: 168 sq ft
| Square feet | 168 |
|---|---|
| Square metres | 15.608 |
| Square yards | 18.667 |
| Square inches | 24,192 |
| Acres | 0.003857 |
| Hectares | 0.001561 |
Tips and common mistakes
Measure at the longest and widest points and make sure every measurement is in the same unit. If you have only a diameter for a circle, halve it to get the radius.
For flooring, paint or tiles, you usually need to add an allowance for waste, so use the area as a starting point and then try the Tile calculator, Paint calculator or Wallpaper calculator calculator. If you need to convert only the units, such as square feet to square metres, the results table gives both at once. Measure twice before ordering materials.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the square footage of a room?
Multiply length by width in feet. If your measurements are in metres, choose metres in the tool and read the square feet from the results table.
How many square feet are in a square metre?
About 10.76. The tool does this conversion for you and shows both.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, work out each area separately and add them together.
