Type one course per line with its letter grade and credits, and this free calculator gives your grade point average, total credits and grade points earned. Choose a 4.0 or 4.3 scale.
Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.
How the GPA calculator works
Each line is read as a course name, a letter grade and then the credits at the end, for example Maths A- 3. If you leave the credits off, the course counts as 1 credit.
The calculator then works like this:
- Each letter is turned into points: A+ and A are 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7 and F 0.
- Points for a course = grade points × credits.
- GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits.
On the 4.3 scale only an A+ changes, and it counts as 4.3. You can also type a number in place of a letter if your school uses numeric points.
This is an unweighted GPA. It does not add extra points for honours or advanced classes, and it does not handle repeated courses or pass/fail modules. Schools differ, so treat the result as an estimate and check your institution’s policy.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Scale | 4.0 scale (A+ is 4.0) |
| Courses | Biology A 4 Calculus B+ 4 English A- 3 History B 3 Statistics A 3 |
Your GPA: 3.61
| Total credits | 17 |
|---|---|
| Grade points earned | 61.3 |
| Courses counted | 5 |
Tips and common mistakes
Check that every line ends with the credits, because a missing number is counted as 1 and can pull the average the wrong way. Use the same credit system your school uses, whether that is credit hours or units.
To see what a future grade would do, add a line for a course you have not finished yet and compare the two results. For UK degrees, GPA is not the usual measure, so use the Weighted grade calculator calculator for a weighted percentage and degree class instead. This is general information, not an official transcript.
Frequently asked questions
What GPA scale does the calculator use?
You can choose a 4.0 scale, where A+ is 4.0, or a 4.3 scale, where A+ is 4.3. Other letters use the same points on both scales.
Does it handle weighted or honours GPAs?
No. It gives an unweighted GPA based on the letter grades and credits you enter. If your school adds points for honours classes, your official figure will be higher.
Can I use it for a UK degree?
Not directly, as UK universities normally use percentages and classes such as a 2:1. Our weighted grade calculator is a better fit for that.
