House of Calculator

Enter the original price and a percentage off, plus an optional second discount. The calculator shows the sale price, how much you save and the true total discount.

Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.

How the Discount works

The tool applies each discount to the price that is left after the previous one:

Sale price = original × (1 − first discount ÷ 100) × (1 − extra discount ÷ 100)

You save the original price minus the sale price, and the total discount is that saving as a percentage of the original.

This is why two discounts do not simply add up. For example, 20% off followed by another 20% off is not 40% off, because the second 20% applies to a smaller price. The total discount is always a little less than the two added together.

Leave the extra discount at 0 if there is only one. Discounts must be between 0% and 100%. The tool does not add delivery, VAT or other charges, and it assumes the stated discounts apply in the order you entered them. The order does not change the final price.

Worked example

Using the default values in the calculator above:

InputValue
Original price£80
Discount25 %
Extra discount10 %

Sale price: £54.00

You save£26.00
Total discount32.5%
Original price£80.00

Tips and common mistakes

Compare offers by the final sale price, not by the headline percentage. A bigger discount on a higher starting price may still cost more. Check whether the extra discount is applied to the sale price or to the original price, because shops describe these differently. Add delivery costs and any minimum spend before you decide. If you want to know how much a price changed, try the percentage change tool.

Frequently asked questions

Do two discounts add together?

No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the total discount is less than the two added together. 20% then 10% gives 28% off, not 30%.

Does the order of the discounts matter?

No. Multiplying the two reductions gives the same final price in either order.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, divide by 0.8 for a 20% discount. This tool works forwards from the original price.
