Enter your current grade, the share of the course already marked and the overall grade you want. The calculator shows the mark you need in the final assessment to reach it.
Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.
How the Grade needed in the final works
You give three numbers: your current grade, the percentage of the course already marked, and your target overall grade.
The final assessment makes up whatever is left, so its weight is 100 minus the share already marked. The calculator rearranges the weighted average to solve for the final mark:
needed mark = (target − current × share marked) ÷ (1 − share marked)
where the share is written as a fraction, so 60% becomes 0.6.
The result is one of three things: a percentage you need, “Already secured” if you cannot drop below your target, or “Not possible, even with 100%” if the target is out of reach.
Limits: it assumes one final assessment worth all of the remaining marks, and it does not allow for pass marks on individual components, resits, rounding or capped marks. The share marked must be above 0 and below 100.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Your current grade | 68 % |
| Share of the course already marked | 60 % |
| Target overall grade | 70 % |
You need in the final: 73%
| Final assessment weight | 40% |
|---|---|
| Current grade | 68% |
| Target | 70% |
Tips and common mistakes
Use the weights from your course handbook rather than guessing, since a final worth 40% needs a very different score from one worth 20%. Enter your current grade as the weighted average of work marked so far, which the Weighted grade calculator calculator can work out for you.
If the answer is higher than you expect, run it again with a slightly lower target to see how much difference it makes. Check whether your course has a separate pass mark for the final itself. This is an estimate, not a promise of your result.
Frequently asked questions
What does 'Already secured' mean?
It means your marks so far already reach the target, even if you scored 0 in the final. Check your course rules in case the final has its own pass mark.
What if the result is above 100%?
The tool says it is not possible, because even full marks in the final would leave you short of the target. You could try a lower target.
Does it work with several assessments left?
Not directly. It treats everything unmarked as one final assessment. For several, work out your average for the marked work first, then use the combined remaining weight.
