Convert megabytes (MB) to gigabytes (GB) in one step. Type a value, change the units if you need a different pair, and the answer updates as you type, with the reverse rate and a quick reference list.

Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.

How to convert megabytes (MB) to gigabytes (GB)

Multiply the number of MB by 0.001 to get GB:

GB = MB × 0.001

To go the other way, divide by 0.001 (or multiply by 1,000). The converter stores each unit as a multiple of a base unit, so you can also pick any other pair of units from the same group.

Tips and common mistakes

Storage makers and network providers use decimal prefixes, where 1 GB is 1,000 MB and 1 MB is 1,000 KB. Many operating systems and programmers use binary units, where 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. That is why a 500 GB drive shows about 465 GiB of space on some computers: nothing is missing, the units differ.

This converter shows both families, with KB, MB, GB and TB as decimal units and KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB as binary units. Choose the one that matches where the figure came from.

Do not confuse bytes with bits. One byte is 8 bits, which matters when comparing file sizes (bytes) with internet speeds (bits per second).

Frequently asked questions

How many gigabytes (GB) are in 1 MB?

1 MB equals 0.001 gigabytes (GB).

How do I convert MB to GB by hand?

Multiply the MB figure by 0.001. For example, 2,500 MB × 0.001 = 2.5 GB.

How do I convert GB back to MB?

Divide the GB figure by 0.001, or multiply it by 1,000. For example, 2.5 GB is 2,500 MB.

Why does my drive show less space than advertised?

Makers use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB) while some systems report binary units (1 GiB = 1,024 MiB), so the same capacity looks about 7 per cent smaller.
