House of Calculator

See what a sum of money from one year is worth in another, using UK consumer price inflation. Works forwards or backwards between 1988 and 2025, with the total change and average yearly rate.

Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.

How the UK inflation calculator works

The tool uses the ONS CPI index (series D7BT, 2015 = 100) annual averages from 1988 to 2025. The index for a year is the average of its monthly figures. The data runs to 2025, the latest full year, and we will update it each year. A 2026 annual average does not exist until January 2027.

To find an equivalent value, the amount is multiplied by the index in the target year and divided by the index in the starting year. So the value goes up when prices rose between the two years. You can choose whether the amount is in the “from” year or the “to” year, which lets you go in either direction.

The tool also shows the cumulative change in the price level, and the average annual rate: the compound yearly rate that gives the same total change over the years between your two choices. CPI measures general price change for a typical basket, not what any one item cost, and the index values are rounded.

Tips and common mistakes

Pick whole calendar years and remember that both are annual averages, so a result for a single month would differ. Use the average annual rate to compare periods rather than reading too much into one year. Remember that wages, house prices and rents moved differently from CPI, so a CPI result is not a guide to those. Ranges that start or end in a high-inflation year, such as 2022 or 2023, can look very different from nearby years. For the very latest monthly inflation figure, check the ONS website.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the data come from?

The ONS CPI index (series D7BT, 2015 = 100), using annual averages from 1988 to 2025. We will update the data each year.

Why does it stop at 2025?

2025 is the latest full year of annual average data. The 2026 annual figure cannot be published until the year is complete.

Is CPI the same as the cost of living for me?

Not exactly. CPI tracks an average basket of goods and services, so your own price change depends on what you buy. CPIH, a different measure, includes housing costs that CPI leaves out.
