Count the working days between two dates, with weekends and public holidays removed. Choose the UK nation or another country, and set which days are the weekend.

Results are estimates for planning. Check the figures before you make a financial or health decision.

How the Working days and bank holidays works

Set a start and end date. Both are counted, and if you put them in the wrong order the tool swaps them. It counts every calendar day in the range, removes the weekend days, then removes any national holidays that fall on a working day.

  • Country: choose England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland or one of the other countries listed. Holidays are generated from built-in rules, including Easter dates, substitute days when a holiday falls on a weekend, and one-off UK holidays.
  • Weekend days: Saturday and Sunday by default, but you can pick Friday and Saturday or another pattern.

The result lists calendar days, weekend days, holidays on working days and the first eight holidays found. Only national public holidays are included. Regional, local and company holidays are not, and holidays set by decree or a lunar calendar should be checked against an official government calendar. If your country is not in the list, only weekends are skipped. Ranges are limited to 20 years.

Tips and common mistakes

Check which holidays your employer actually gives. Many employers add company shutdown days, and some count bank holidays as part of annual leave, which changes your own working-day total.

For delivery or notice periods, check whether the start date counts. Here it does, so a range from Monday to Friday is five days. Scotland and Northern Ireland have holidays that England and Wales do not, so choose the right nation. See UK bank holidays and how to count working days for more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Are bank holidays taken out automatically?

Yes. Holidays for the country you choose are removed if they fall on a working day within your range. The first eight are listed in the results.

Is the start date included?

Yes. Both the start and end dates are counted, so a Monday to Friday range gives five days before any holidays.

Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. The UK options include England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, which have different bank holidays.
